Traveling abroad? Takes these safety tips with you

Jul 25, 2023

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – As Americans are still working out their pent-up demand for travel an expert has some simple suggestions for staying safe overseas.

YouTube host and University of Illinois associate business professor Mark Wolters tells the Noon Business Hour there are some simple ways to stay safe on your journey.

For example, avoid wearing soccer jerseys abroad. You don’t want to raise the ire of fans for a rival club, and you could also be confused for a soccer “hooligan.”

“If you’re wearing a soccer jersey, you’re a soccer fan – you’re not a tourist,” Wolters says. “So, those restaurants, those shops, those places that are used to being really nice to the tourists to get them to buy things, they’re not looking at you that way.”

Other tips: Pack light, or efficiently, to avoid carrying a large number of bags around an unfamiliar city. And wear comfortable shoes, in case you have to run away from danger, Wolter said.

“Those flip flops don’t help. Good shoes are very important. Make sure you break them in before you travel.”
